The Rare Recovery Story of Mr. Francis

Mr. Francis Kumar Dumpala, a 64-year-old male, faced a significant health setback in the form of a CVA-Intracerebral Haemorrhage, right CG bleed with intraventricular extension and hydrocephalus. Despite enduring a challenging diagnosis and subsequent surgeries, Mr. Francis’ determination and the support of a neuro rehabilitation center have played a pivotal role in his journey towards functional recovery.

The diagnosis

On 15th November 2022, Mr. Francis was diagnosed with a CVA-Intracerebral Haemorrhage, specifically; a right CG (cortical gyrus) bleed with intraventricular extension and hydrocephalus. This condition occurs when a blood vessel within the brain ruptures, causing bleeding and subsequent damage to the surrounding brain tissue. The severity of the bleed resulted in moderate brain injury, as indicated by his Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score of 9 upon admission.

Surgical Management and Recovery

To address his condition, Mr. Francis underwent surgical intervention, which involved the insertion of an External Ventricular Drain (EVD) to alleviate hydrocephalus. Additionally, a tracheotomy was performed on 21st October 2022 to facilitate his respiratory needs during the recovery process.

Gradual Rehabilitation

After the surgical procedures, Mr. Francis embarked on his path to recovery. While his progress was commendable, he faced residual deficits that required specialized care. Therefore, he was admitted to Ucchvas transitional care rehabilitation centre, a facility equipped with a dedicated team of healthcare professionals who specialize in neuro rehabilitation.

Past Medical History

Prior to his CVA, Mr. Francis had a medical history of hypertension for 10 years, which was fairly controlled. Additionally, he had been managing diabetes for the same duration and had been successful in maintaining good control.

Physical Examination and Current Status

At the time of admission, Mr. Francis exhibited a level of consciousness categorized as V (responding to verbal stimulation) on the AVPU scale. His GCS score of 9 indicated a moderate brain injury. However, his pupils were bilaterally normal in size and reacted appropriately to light, suggesting a positive sign.

The Journey of Neuro Rehabilitation

Mr. Francis’ stay at the Ucchvas transitional care rehabilitation centre marked the beginning of his neuro rehabilitation journey. The multidisciplinary team comprising neurologists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, and psychologists worked collaboratively to develop a personalized rehabilitation plan.

The rehabilitation program focused on improving Mr. Francis’ functional abilities and quality of life. Physiotherapy helped him regain strength, balance, and coordination through exercises and therapeutic interventions. Occupational therapy aimed to enhance his ability to perform daily activities such as dressing, grooming, and eating. Speech-language pathology addressed any speech or swallowing difficulties that arose as a result of the CVA. Additionally, psychological support was provided to both Mr. Francis and his family to ensure emotional well-being during this challenging time.

Mr. Francis Kumar’s journey through neuro rehabilitation demonstrates the resilience and determination needed to overcome significant health challenges. Through surgical intervention and the dedicated efforts of the neuro rehabilitation team, he has made remarkable progress in his recovery. While his road to complete recovery may be long, his story serves as an inspiration to others facing similar difficulties. It highlights the importance of specialized care, personalized rehabilitation plans, and the unwavering support of healthcare professionals and loved ones.
