Journey to Recovery: Masaiah's Story of Triumph Over a Severe Head Injury

Meet Masaiah, a 42-year-old farmer from Ramayanpet. One fateful day, he experienced a traumatic road traffic accident (RTA) while riding his bike. He fell and skidded, sustaining a significant head injury. Swiftly taken to a local hospital within an hour of the accident, he was then transferred to Care Hospital within the next hour.

At Care Hospital, He was diagnosed with a left convexity acute subdural hematoma (SDH). In a race against time, the medical team performed an emergency left FTD decompressive craniectomy along with a tracheostomy. He was then admitted to the ICU, where he received intensive care for three days and stayed in the hospital for ten days.

Following his acute care, He was transferred to UCCHVAS Rehabilitation Centre for comprehensive rehab. Upon admission, his Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score was E4 V1 M5, indicating that he was alert but had limited verbal response and motor function. He exhibited significant agitation, a common symptom of alcohol withdrawal, and had limb power rated at 2/5.

Within a month of dedicated rehabilitation, His physical condition showed remarkable improvement. His limb power increased to 3/5, marking a significant step in his recovery journey.

Two months after his accident, at the time of discharge, his GCS had improved to E4 V5 M6. He was now walking independently and managing activities of daily living (ADLs) with supervision. His speech and swallowing abilities had returned to normal, and he was discharged with significantly reduced agitation and minimal symptoms of alcohol withdrawal.

Masaiah’s journey from a severe head injury to regaining his independence is a testament to the power of timely medical intervention and comprehensive rehabilitation. His story is one of resilience and determination, showcasing the incredible progress that can be made with the right care and support.
